Dog Grooming Tips

How is quarantine going for you and your pet? I’m sure your pet loves the attention they are receiving, with the family being home more often. Lots of walks, treats, and laying together streaming a show on television. Maybe you are watching the dog channel!

If it’s been longer than usual between your pets grooming appointment, your pet will benefit from grooming their coat at home.

The right tool for the job and a nice sunny spot in the yard is all you need. If your pet is a long-haired breed dog, a pin brush or a slicker brush is recommended. Short-coated dogs enjoy the massaging feeling of a soft bristle brush.

With all the walking and playing you are doing in the yard, brushing your dog will help remove the dirt and debris from their coat. Routinely brushing your pet will also help control shedding and prevent mats from forming.

Laying in the front yard being brushed by your best friend should be an enjoyable experience. Start with some petting and getting your dog to relax. Talk to your dog in a calm, soothing voice while you show them the brush you will be using. When you feel your pet is comfortable, it’s time to begin brushing. Start with a section of your dog’s body where they are used to being touched. Always brush in the direction that the hair grows with gentle strokes down and away from the dog’s body. Take your time and untangle any snarls you encounter.

When you are done grooming your dog try to remember, a treat is desired by your pet. Lots of treats and praise remind your dog that being brushed is a positive activity.
